Editing with iMovie - #13

Camera work is important to film shots, but what about the work to put those shots together? For this, an editing software is needed. The editing software that seems the easiest to use for me is iMovie, as it is one that I am already most familiar with. Using this will make the process more simple and quick.    This software makes it easy to import videos straight from my phone or any other filming device and make it a movie, or in this case, an opening to one. Putting together all the clips is also fairly simple, as you can delete the ones you don't need, or shorten ones to cut out any extra length. You are also able to edit how loud the sound will be by using the volume tab. You can also add a voiceover or background music in the settings.     It also has support for green screen effects, which makes creating a background more accessible. Another good feature it has is the text feature, which allows you to add text to the screen. The last main feature is the speed section, whic

Character Types - #12

Who doesn't love a good, humble winner? Sports drama films are likely to include a protagonist who has gone through hardships in their life and eventually overcomes a great challenge. However, there is more than just the protagonist to consider.   For example, what or who poses a challenge to the protagonist? By first identifying this, it will be easier to create a plot to follow along. The 3 most common conflicts are man vs man, man vs nature, and man vs technology. I have decided to use the man vs man conflict, as I believe it will fit the plot I am looking to create.   What types of antagonists are there? There are 4 main types such as villains, conflict-creators, inanimate forces, and the protagonists themselves. The antagonist type that will be included is the villain. The villain will be the main opposition to my project's protagonist, and who will also be the one to push them further beyond their limits.    With that being said, what about secondary characters? The ro

Which audience tend to enjoy the sports genre? - #11

It is a known fact that certain film genres have their target audience but what about sports films? They could be intended for all ages, depending on the actual plot. Most comedy sports films are great for families and a younger audience, such as 'Sandlot' and 'The Karate Kid'. There may also be some which are not meant for children, but rather a more mature audience, such as 'Southpaw' starring Jake Gyllenhaal, and '42' starring Chadwick Boseman.   With age out of the way, who actually enjoys sports movies the most? People who have played sports themselves, or those who are just a fan of an underdog story and teamwork tend to enjoy sports dramas. Male or female viewership is likely equal, as there are either male or female protagonists in popular films, such as 'Creed' or 'Million Dollar Baby'.    The elements of sports movies that fans like most likely reside in the plot or character arcs, however, some may not realize how much of an

Songs that could be incorporated - #10

Songs are used many times in films, whether it was created just for a specific scene, or it was used to match the vibe. It is also something that the audience may be able to relate to, or just a song that they genuinely enjoy listening to. That being said, it is important to find the appropriate song to match the scene.   An example of a song that was made for a film was The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar's 'Pray for Me' in Black Panther. The song gave the vibe of a popping underground club and mixed well in the background as the characters exchanged dialogue. A song that I would like to use would be 'Everyday' by A$AP Rocky, as I feel that it would fit the theme of a training montage.   Another example is 'Lose Yourself' by Eminem in 8 Mile. This song fits well with the theme, as it was made as a reflection of Eminem's character, and was used to highlight his story. A song that would go well with a character's reflection I believe would be Michael Jack

How can lighting be used? - #9

Lighting is an important element in interesting an audience. It can help to alter their focus on certain things that are being shown. To make my project pop on screen, I must explore all of the different types of ways that lighting can be used.   Natural light can be a great way to illuminate the settings of a scene, whether it be outside using the sun as light, or inside using the sun to shine light through windows. It is definitely an easy source of lighting to find and use as well. Implementing this may not be as difficult, as I would be able to use the lighting of the sun during the day, or the moon at night.   Another form of lighting that can be used is artificial lighting. This may consist of street lamps, flashlights, LED panels, or just plain lightbulbs. Given this information, filming with any of these sources of lighting may be no problem.   One issue concerning lighting, however, is how it may affect the tone of the scene. For example, if it is cloudy outside and a scene

Famous scenes enhanced by music - #8

Music is a great way to use sound to appeal to the audience. Film directors use it to enhance the mood. One example used in the horror genre is Insidious. The music is very important to determine how the audience should feel during a scene, which is because it is the second most important sense to humans. The example shown below is meant to drive fear into the heart of the audience, as an eerily high-pitched violin is heard screeching a tune repetitively, and all sound comes to a sudden stop, which then blasts scary music and leads into the introductory title of the film.   Another good example is the music used in Jurassic Park. This scene highlights Dr. Grant and Dr. Sattler's first sighting of a dinosaur. Since the objective of the scene was to showcase the magnitude of such an amazing sighting, the sound motif signifies something that is grand and becomes very familiar in the franchise                                            .   And last but not least, Baby Driver uses mu

Sounds in movies vs what they actually are - #7

Sounds are used in film all the time, but are not always created equally. For example, the sound of footsteps may not be actually happening during the shooting of a scene, but rather the sound that is used is in a sound laboratory. In this post, I will dive into how sound is created versus how it is used.   In my opening sequence, I would like to incorporate the use of the foley sound as it may help me earn some points on the final assessment. Some examples I could use of these could be footsteps, raindrops, or even the sound of boxing gloves hitting a target. This would be important to use in my project, as it adds more intricacy and complexion.   As I stated before, foley sound can be used during events of a scene but it can also be used for background noise such as raindrops. There are many ways the sound of rain can be recreated. For example, in a bathtub with water dripping from the showerhead, frying something in oil, or tapping fingers on a desk.     Overall, foley sound woul

TV show episode analysis - #6

Some creations may be considered original, however, they may have built it off of an idea that inspired them. For some inspiration, I decided to look at sports films. Particularly, boxing-specific ones as it can help me create a more accurate representation of the lifestyle that boxers live. One show that I decided to research and have actually watched entirely, is 'Mike' 2022. This show displays the upbringing and lifestyle of professional boxer Mike Tyson.   The episode that most interested me was episode 2 'Monster'. This episode focused on Mike's teenage years before he became successful. The episode used many flashback sequences to showcase certain moments in his life where he had to deal with struggles. This was important to study, as I will try to model my project to something very similar.    Many camera shots in this episode were used, such as long shots to show off the props and mice-en-scene, close-ups to enhance the emotions of the characters, and over

Popular figures - #5

To go more in-depth into the storyline of the main protagonist, I wanted to focus on their background. I then researched popular professional boxers with many different beginnings to gauge how their upbringing led to eventual success. This is important to my project, as it will help me to create more character development and highlight the struggles that they had to deal with.   The first boxer I decided to research was James 'Buster' Douglas. Famously known for his historical upset win over Mike Tyson, Douglas grew up as a victim of bullying. This changed when his mother told him to stand up for himself.    Ironically enough, Mike Tyson also grew up as a victim of bullying. This all started when he was a kid who got made fun of for the way he talked, being overweight, or just the fact that he took an interest in pigeons. Mike would learn to channel his emotions when he met his late trainer and mentor, Cus D'amato.   Lastly, a large success in the boxing world, who is al
