Which audience tend to enjoy the sports genre? - #11

It is a known fact that certain film genres have their target audience but what about sports films? They could be intended for all ages, depending on the actual plot. Most comedy sports films are great for families and a younger audience, such as 'Sandlot' and 'The Karate Kid'. There may also be some which are not meant for children, but rather a more mature audience, such as 'Southpaw' starring Jake Gyllenhaal, and '42' starring Chadwick Boseman.

With age out of the way, who actually enjoys sports movies the most? People who have played sports themselves, or those who are just a fan of an underdog story and teamwork tend to enjoy sports dramas. Male or female viewership is likely equal, as there are either male or female protagonists in popular films, such as 'Creed' or 'Million Dollar Baby'.

The elements of sports movies that fans like most likely reside in the plot or character arcs, however, some may not realize how much of an effect micro elements play in gaining fans' attention. For example, a movie like Rocky is based around a poor, blue-collar worker who works night and day at the boxing gym and his job to try to make ends meet. What some fans may recognize are Rocky's home (mise-en-scene), the darkness and shadows whenever he looks at himself in the mirror (lighting), and the music that contributes to the enhancement of a scene (sound).

How will I be able to engage this audience and sports drama fans? The answer is to focus on plot, and micro elements such as mise-en-scene, lighting, and sound, and cater to each demographic, i.e children, teens, adults, seniors, and men and women. Now knowing this, I will work to create an agreeable, but entertaining plot, which highlights social groups and stereotypes, as well as incorporating micro elements which will enhance the production on screen.
