Music is a great way to use sound to appeal to the audience. Film directors use it to enhance the mood. One example used in the horror genre is Insidious. The music is very important to determine how the audience should feel during a scene, which is because it is the second most important sense to humans. The example shown below is meant to drive fear into the heart of the audience, as an eerily high-pitched violin is heard screeching a tune repetitively, and all sound comes to a sudden stop, which then blasts scary music and leads into the introductory title of the film.
Another good example is the music used in Jurassic Park. This scene highlights Dr. Grant and Dr. Sattler's first sighting of a dinosaur. Since the objective of the scene was to showcase the magnitude of such an amazing sighting, the sound motif signifies something that is grand and becomes very familiar in the franchise .
And last but not least, Baby Driver uses music to enhance the emotions in the moment. In the opening scene, the getaway driver listens to music during the entire event. From the beginning, the music fades in and out as it shows each person who will be in the whole ordeal. Right before the chase, the song continues to say "Bellbottoms" as the engine of the car is revved, which synchronizes the sound very nicely.
As we can clearly see, or hear, the use of music is an element that we can use to greatly enhance films. Whether it would be to make the audience feel a certain emotion about the scene, or to synchronize the visuals to what we hear, music should be a necessary component in filmmaking. To relate my research to my final project, I will use soundtracks that fit with the overall emotions of a scene, and I will also try to balance what the audience sees versus what they hear as well.
