Scheduling time for filming - #19

Shooting for the film may be the fun part, but many forget about the tedious, and tricky organization of it. For instance, time is needed to film. This means that all of the actors that are needed must be available for a set amount of time. This factor makes filming the project, especially promptly more difficult.   I asked my friend Kyle, who will be starring the main character if he would be available on the 12th, which is on a Monday. Unfortunately, he was not free at that time, which was when the other actors were free. This really made the process more difficult, as I needed a particular part filmed by then.    In other news, I was able to get all of my friends to agree to a different date. The date I picked was February 13th, which happened to fall on a Tuesday, statistically, Tuesday is not a very busy day, and this happened to be true, as nothing had come up in any of their schedules or even mine.    Even with the minor impediment of one not being able to film on the 12th in

An obstacle that needed to be overcome - #18

A good film project does not come without its issues. Throughout my progression of creating the final project, some problems have arisen that have caused some delays in the process. To fully understand why these problems have occurred, we must dive into what is needed in the film.   To create a film at all, you must have good cinematic shots. The problem with this is finding the right angle. For instance, I needed to film a scene in which a car drives off. To do this, I needed to decide whether the camera should be placed at a low, or high angle, as well as close, or far.   Following what is seen on the screen, sound would also need to be synthesized with the viewing. To make the sound of the car driving off, I decided to pre-record the sound of the engine revving. This would be great for the foley sound element.    To tie everything in this one part together, I would need to put the clips in the correct order. For this part of the process, I used iMovie for the editing. A draft of t

Foley sounds example - #17

Foley sounds are used in a lot of films. Some can be very creative, or maybe not at all what you think is making the sound. My film will need to include this for the creative aspect. The sounds that I will recreate are a car starting, the sound of velcro on boxing gloves, and hitting the heavy bag.   For the sound of the car starting, my mom recorded me starting up the engine. I also included the sound of it revving up, as it will show that the car is getting ready to speed off. I decided to recreate this as a foley sound, as I thought it would make the tone of the car engine sound more deep.   The sound of the Velcro on the boxing gloves was very simple and straightforward to recreate. I decided to add this sound as I believed it would be a unique sound element to add in the background. By doing it this way, I would be able to focus more on the dialogue during actual film time and add this additional sound to the background   Hitting the heavy bag is a very important part of the fi

Casting - #16

To make a great film, there needs to be great actors. Somebody who can bring out the emotion of the characters to life, and really fit the role. I need 4 roles for the opening sequence, and without further ado, let me introduce each character.  Main Character/Protagonist   For this role, I cast Kyle. He is my best friend and knows how I want things to be done. He understands the underdog story the most, as he has always proven to never quit and give everything a try. I have also taught him the fundamentals of boxing, so he will be able to choreograph any fight scenes well.  Bully #1      The bully will be somebody who can make snarky remarks and quick-witted mean responses. An exceptional bully character will be able to make the audience feel upset with their actions and bring the best out of the protagonist. I chose to cast my friend, Joey, as I believe he is capable of taking advantage of this role unlike any other and also having fun with it. Bully #2    The second bully will be s

Theming - #15

A central idea or theme helps to portray the message of the film. Whether negative or positive, a good theme will leave the audience with something to think about. A theme that I will use in my final project is the triumph of an individual who can prevail despite the difficulties.   The hope for using this theme is that the audience will gain a newfound boost of confidence, and not be afraid to face their toughest challenges. To do this, I must bring emotion through all of the characters combined. The audience will feel empathetic for the protagonist, as they are the point of interest.   Tieing in the theme to the characters seems easy, but what about minor things such as background details? A good way to make a character seem more in touch with their story is the surroundings. To make the protagonist in my film seem more humble, I will include mise-en-scene items and costuming that fit that description.   Another good way to connect the film to the theme is by the use of the dialogu

Initial Storyboard - #14

To know which events may occur in the film, I need a storyboard that is organized to help me create a mind map. I plan to also use it as a basic layout for my idea. Before I go ahead with a final copy of a storyboard, I came up with this quickly brainstormed one that has all of the basic parts.   For a better understanding of what is happening, the first part opens with an establishing shot of the two bullies who are attacking the victim. The second box shows the two who had overcome their victim and now are talking down upon him. The third shows the car as it drives off. The fourth shows an over-the-shoulder of the protagonist looking at a garage. The fifth shows the protagonist training with his mentor, and the sixth shows his mentor giving a talk to him.      What would I change or add to this initial storyboard?   Because I brainstormed this very quickly, I didn't leave myself much time to visualize more than 6 parts. For the next one I do, I will spend more time to visualize
