Genre Conventions - #3

The sports genre may not seem super complex, however, it does have many conventions. In order to understand what make up these types of films, we must ask ourselves what are genre conventions? These are elements, themes, topics, situations, and plots that are common in a certain genre. Sports films are most likely to consist of a tragic background that introduced how the character was brought to be in the situation they're in, an athletic contest that define the central characters, and a resolution in which the two rivals resolve in the end. The specific types of these films are the biopic, the sports history film, the documentary, and the typical boxing film.

Drama also comes with its typical conventions, like slow motion, monologue, adding narration, and also exhibits realistic characters and plots. These conventions when combined, help to create some of my most favorite movies. Some examples of these are 12 Years A Slave (2013), One Night In Miami (2020), and Forrest Gump (1994). These seemed most interesting to me, as they were able to use stereotypes and representations to create the plot of the films. One Night In Miami (2020) | Film Review | This Is Film

The most important conventions that I found include an underdog story, rivalries and competition, an inspirational mentor, emotional roller coaster, and a redemption arc. These all together will help to create what I think will be a well-rounded plot to a film opening. This genre of sports drama has a unique ability to create excitement and a compelling story which may also hit close to home for some.

The combination of these conventions will certainly be included in the final project, as it will correlate to representation and help me develop my plot further. Through my research, I figured that there would be several hiccups in finding the conventions of sports drama films. However, to my suprise, this genre of film follows a simple, but effective pattern, that works to gain the audience's attention and excitement, but also make them feel sympathetic for the characters as well.

Settings to Consider - #4

When creating a film, it is always important to identify the setting, or multiple settings. This is because it will help to match the event to when and where it is taking place. Since my film will be about a teenager who learns how to box, there should definitely be a boxing gym used at some point in the film. The location should also be clean and organized as well.     It should also include an exterior setting, which may showcase how the characters interact with each other more openly, and at certain times of the day. A great exterior setting to use would be around the neighborhood, because it is an easy place to go out and film at and there is a lot of space for different types of camera shots. There may be some parts of the film that need to be filmed at night, or during the day, and this can be greatly demonstrated using the natural lighting of the sun.   The location of the final battle should be noted as it may be included in the opening. This is because I believe that tying

Genre History - #2

Since my project will be a sports drama, I needed to do some research on the genre's history to gain more info. To start off, the Sports genre began with Charlie Chaplin's 'The Champion' (1915), which is a boxing silent film. The drama genre has more confusing beginnings however, since it was said to have originated in Greece as an evolution of religious ritual. Around the same time however, the Sanskrit Indian Prakarana arose, which is a play that consisted of five acts. This may have been regarded to spreading the genre of drama in the east, the same way Greece did in the west.  As I've said before, 'The Champion' was the very first sports film. However, this was only a silent film which came around during the silent film era. Meaning that there was no real dialogue or important sounds which could influence the meaning of the film. A much more popular sports film that came later was Rocky (1976) starring Sylvester Stallone. Rocky has also remained a cultu
